What to do in the event of death?

If the death occurs at home, call 9-1-1. An emergency care doctor will confirm the death.

If the death occurs at a seniors’ residence or hospital, the staff on-site will guide you. In all cases, the simplest course of action is to call us directly at 1-833-989-8383. Part of our job is to help you, especially in these delicate situations.

What information do we need to provide in the event of death?

Feelings of grief can quickly become overwhelming, and this is a perfectly natural reaction. Our courteous and respectful counsellors will be on the phone with you, guiding you at the pace you choose, to ensure that all pertinent information is provided.

Have the following information on hand: the deceased’s date of birth and their parents’ names, their social insurance number, health insurance card, name of their spouse, as well as the date and location of their marriage, if applicable.

Can we modify prearrangements?

Of course! Whether you made arrangements with us or a different funeral home, you have the right to modify, cancel, or transfer your prearrangements. Contact us for the steps to take.

What is the final viewing?

We know that grief is a complex, personal process. The Canadian Cremation Center cares for people who would suffer from not seeing their loved one, one last time.

It is possible for us to prepare the body for viewing, giving families a chance for a final farewell to their loved one at the crematorium. This optional private gathering is reserved for close family and friends by invitation—and according to the prior wishes of the deceased to this effect (unlike public viewings at a funeral home).

What is the memorial space?

For thousands of years, humans have honoured the deceased during their transition toward the light. Knowing where we said our final goodbyes helps us to let loved ones go with as little bitterness as possible, and allows us to give them a symbolic place in our hearts.

Whether at the crematorium, the cemetery, columbarium, or in nature, there are several memorial spaces offered to help people gather, now and in the future, where the body (or symbol) of their loved one rests.

What is cremation?

Cremation is one of the most widely-used methods for handing the remains of the deceased (used in over 70% of deaths in Quebec).

Observed throughout numerous civilizations since the Stone Age, cremation has evolved to optimize the process, making it as quick and energy-efficient as possible.

Once the steps are completed, the cooled ashes are placed in an urn and returned to the family.

It is possible to be present during a cremation, according to the family’s choices or the wishes of the deceased.

Is it necessary to hold a viewing of the deceased?

No. Viewings are actually becoming less and less common in Quebec (currently, only 25% of the deceased are viewed publicly versus 95% in 1975).

Other than the cost difference, 85% of deaths occur after an extended stay in a care facility, during which time family and friends had the opportunity to their visit loved one before they passed.  Furthermore, people now often pass away at older ages and do not wish to be viewed.

What happens to the ashes?

  • Cremation allows for several options for disposing of the ashes:
  • bury the urn in the ground, with a bronze plaque or monument to mark the location;
  • place the ashes in a columbarium, an installation with specialized compartments designed to hold urns;
  • have a family member keep the ashes at their home, or any other location chosen by the deceased;
  • scatter the ashes in a meaningful area, as long as this is in accordance with local laws;
  • transform the ashes into a diamond:  thanks to advanced technology, a portion of the ashes can be used to make a genuine diamond.

Is it true than I can get a $2,500 benefit?

It is possible that you are eligible to receive a benefit from the Quebec Pension Plan, up to $2,500, to help cover funeral expenses. You can find more information here.
